Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

At Westbury C of E Junior School (WJS), we are fully committed to inclusion. We believe that every child is unique and capable of success. As a school we ensure that all pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) are supported to make the best possible progress academically, socially and emotionally.

Wherever possible, pupils’ needs are met within their class through high-quality adaptive teaching, carefully structured support and strong relational practice.

Our ethos centres on calm consistency, clear routines and a culture of belonging.

Working in Partnership

We believe that positive relationships between school and home are central to effective SEND provision. Parents and carers are partners in the graduated approach and are invited to regular review meetings to discuss progress, provision and next steps.

Where a pupil has an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), Annual Reviews are held in line with Wiltshire guidance, and transition planning begins early to ensure smooth progression to the next phase of education.

The Four Broad Areas of SEND

In line with the SEND Code of Practice (2015), needs are identified within four broad areas:

Communication and Interaction including speech, language and communication needs, and Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC).

Cognition and Learning including specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia, moderate learning difficulties, and difficulties with memory, processing and consolidation.

Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) including anxiety, emotional regulation needs, trauma-informed responses and attachment-related differences.

Sensory and/or Physical Needs including sensory processing differences, hearing or visual impairment, and physical disabilities requiring adaptations or specialist equipment.

At WJS our SEND Coordinator is Jude Sutton

Wiltshire Local Offer

The Children and Families Act 2014 requires Local Authorities to publish information about services available for children and young people aged 0–25 with SEND. This is known as the Local Offer.

Wiltshire Local Offer is an important resource for understanding what support is available across the county.

Families can access the Local Offer via:
